THE JAPAN THEME IS CLOSED SINCE DECEMBER 2023
Aket Kubic's series "Japan" draws from his childhood memories. For him, Japan represents a dream populated by fantastical creatures and flamboyant samurai. These images, imbued with deep nostalgia, evoke a world where reality and mythology intersect.
TEXT OF THE WORK
FRENCH POEME
"Dans l’enchantement des instants passés, imbriqués dans une vie bien rangée, ainsi nourrissait-il ses rêves en secret s’extirpant de cette vie toute faute, cette solitude ancrée sur le ciment. Une fenêtre s’ouvre, pleine d’avenir, sur un ciel parsemé d’étoiles."

Some works from the Japan series
In this series, Aket Kubic explores traditional Japanese motifs while reinterpreting them through the lens of his imagination. The samurai, symbols of courage and honor, appear in heroic poses, while the chimera, fantastical creatures from folklore, add a dreamlike dimension to his work. Each piece becomes a window into an idealized Japan, where childhood memories blend with a reinvented reality.
Aket Kubic uses vibrant colors and dynamic shapes to capture the essence of this Japanese dream. By incorporating elements of contemporary pop culture, he manages to establish a dialogue between the past and the present, making his art accessible and relevant to a modern audience. Through his series "Japan," he invites us to explore our own imaginations and rediscover the narratives that shape our perception of the world.
Triptych: The Sumo Wrestlers Face Off. (Private collection)
FORMAT: 116 x 81 cm
Artist's Statement:
Originally, sumo, this uniquely Japanese form of wrestling, is believed to have been an agrarian ritual aimed at obtaining the favor of the gods for better harvests. This ancient sport embodies much more than a mere physical confrontation; it is steeped in tradition, respect, and spirituality, where every gesture is laden with symbolism.
My first triptych—what a challenge! Creating a tripartite work requires special attention to establish a harmonious synergy between the different pieces. Each panel must not only stand out with its own visual identity but also interact with the others to form a coherent whole. I enjoyed delving deep into my creative process, contemplating the intention and message I wanted to convey through this work.

FRENCH POEME
"Ramen, ô poésie culinaire,
Tu fais danser mes sens en l'air,
Dans chaque bouchée, je retrouve,
Un peu de Japon, un peu de rêve"

Japanese culture pays special attention to the red obtained from safflower.
In the shadows of the night, a samurai prepares himself.
Clad in ornate armor, ready to fight.
On his kimono, a dragon unfolds with pride, it seems to come to life, ready to join him.
